An IEC-standard non-sparking asynchronous motor designed for operation in hazardous areas where explosive gas atmospheres may occur infrequently. In current IEC/IECEx terminology, this protection concept is generally classified as Ex ec and is described by major manufacturers as the successor to the former “non-sparking” designation. These motors are built to minimize the risk of arcs, sparks, and excessive surface temperatures, making them suitable for Zone 2 applications.

They are typically used as rugged three-phase induction motors for industrial duties such as pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, and general process equipment in sectors like oil and gas, chemicals, marine, food processing, and other hazardous-area installations. IEC non-sparking motors are commonly offered with IEC frame sizes, hazardous-area certification such as IECEx/ATEX, and efficiency classes aligned with IEC 60034-30-1.
